Reborn baby dolls can cost hundreds of dollars for a doll which has had its hair rerooted, skin tone completely washed, features repainted, and body restuffed. Shirley Temple Dolls by Ideal
Shirley Temple Dolls from Ideal came in 9 sizes 11″, 13″, 16″, 17″, 18″, 20″, 22″, 25″, and 27″. They are composition dolls.
Composition dolls are made of a 6 piece sawdust-based, wood-pulp material strung together with elastic, that was then painted flesh toned. Shirley Temple Dolls by Ideal have hazel eyes with hair upper lashes, and painted eyebrows, lower lashes, lip paint, and nostrils. The wigs were made of mohair and styled in golden curls similar to Shirleys’. The clothes were made to resemble Shirley’s own clothes and the outfits of her movies. They were produced from 1934 to 1939. Except for the earliest dolls, most were marked SHIRLEY TEMPLE on the back of the head and/or the back of the neck. The resemblance to the real Shirley was uncanny in these dolls, and they are a collectors favorite. Finding a doll in excellent condition is difficult and expensive, because composition can crack and craze.
These dolls are valued at up to $200 in bad condition, up to and over $1000 in excellent condition .

American Girl Doll
My daughter, on her 5th birthday, wanted an American Girl Doll. At the time I was a doll neophyte, little did I realize what was to come. Today - she is well on her way to being 7, and we have a house full of American Girl “stuff”. You probably know this already - but American Girl isn’t just a doll, it is a lifestyle for little girls.
It began with a trip to the American Girl Store in Chicago. She and Mom had lunch in the cafe, with her new American Girl in a seat attached to the table of course, and proceeded to shop me into the poorhouse, albeit she looks good in our poorhouse. She and her doll are never very far apart. Her doll even traveled with us to Disney this year (she had a wonderful time according to my daughter).
So save yourself some money and get the American Girl basics from eBay sellers, but, if possible, make sure your little girl gets to experience an American Girl Store and Cafe - the delight in her eyes will make it worth every penny.
