Reborn Baby Dolls
The technique of creating a reborn doll typically involves the following:
- The doll is taken apart and factory paint is removed. Recently, artisans have begun sculpting model babydolls and making vinyl kits that are made specifically for reborning. The kits do not have factory paint, and the doll comes unassembled.
- The exterior is painted using techniques to add to the appearance of translucent skin, with effects such as veins, blotching, and milk-spots to resemble a newborn baby.
- Hair and eyelashes, usually mohair or human hair, are applied using special tools and needles strand by strand, which can take as long as 30 hours per doll
- The original vinyl body is replaced with a soft stuffed and weighted body. The vinyl body can also be cut in half to create front and back ‘plates’ to allow mounting of the doll to a photograph or to display the doll.
- A magnet may be attached inside the mouth/head for attaching a dummy/pacifier or hair bows.

Reborn Dolls
The popularity of reborn baby dolls which are recreated to seem as realistic as possible, has contributed to the great popularity of the soft-skin baby dolls produced by companies like Berenguer and Ashton Drake.
Reborn baby dolls can cost hundreds of dollars for a doll which has had its hair rerooted, skin tone completely washed, features repainted, and body restuffed. Some of these dolls are so realistic that, at a glance, they truly look like a baby! Not everyone can spend hundreds of dollars on a reborn baby, and the soft-skin dolls like Welcome Home Baby Emily from Ashton Drake and the new soft-skin dolls coming from Lee Middleton certainly are realistic enough, and they are generally under $200.00.
